Android claims 70% smartphone market share

Strategy Analytics confirms that Google's wildly popular mobile operating system claimed approximately 70.1% of the lucrative smartphone market in the fourth quarter of 2012.

22% of smartphone shipments were Apple iPhones; meaning the two mobile platforms accounted for an impressive 92.1% of shipments.

That leaves just a paltry 7.9% for all other operating systems, such as Windows Phone, BlackBerry, Tizen, and future platforms like FireFox OS and Canonical Linux.

"Combined together, Apple and Android accounted for a record 92 percent share of all smartphones shipped globally in the fourth quarter of 2012," Scott Bicheno, senior analyst at Strategy Analytics, explained in a recent industry note.

"The worldwide smartphone industry has effectively become a duopoly as consumer demand has polarized around mass-market Android models and premium Apple designs."

Interestingly, Apple's market share declined slightly, from 24 percent a year ago to 22 percent in the fourth quarter of 2012 - even though Cupertino's actual sales increased 29% year over year.

Meanwhile, Google's Android almost doubled its shipments from 80.6 million units at the end of 2011 to 152.1 million in the holiday quarter of 2012 - prompting Android's global market share to increase from an estimated 51 percent of shipments to 70% at the end of 2012.

In total, approximately a half-billion Android phones are reported to have shipped in calendar 2012. In comparison, Apple shipped 135.8 million iPhones in the same span.

"Android is clearly the undisputed volume leader of the smartphone industry at the present time," said Neil Mawston, executive director at Strategy Analytics.

"Android’s challenge for 2013 will be to defend its leadership, not only against Apple, but also against an emerging wave of hungry challengers that includes Microsoft, Blackberry, Firefox and Tizen."

6.44-inch Sony?

In late 2012 rumors were circulating that Sony was hard at work at a 6-inch-plus large form factor Android phone. If the latest leaked image from China is to be believed, such a device could soon be on the way. The shot above comes from Chinese forum Digi-wo, and was posted by a member claiming that it's a part from a 6.44-inch, 1080p Sony smartphone/tablet device.

There's no way of verifying the image, except to say that the setting certainly looks like a traditional production line leak, complete with sterile-looking background and protective gloves. The screen itself sure looks large, but with nothing for scale it's difficult to get an idea of its exact size. In any case, some quick Photoshoppery reveals to us that it is indeed a 16:9 panel. Also, the lack of physical buttons suggests it's an Android device, though it doesn't match any Sony phone we're familiar with.

With 5-inch smartphones set to become increasingly commonplace this year, manufacturers look set to push things even further in the large smartphone space. At CES a couple of weeks ago we saw Huawei attempt to gain traction with the 6.1-inch Ascend Mate. And rumors persist that Samsung will target a 6.3-inch screen size for the successor to its Galaxy Note 2.

If this is an upcoming Sony smartphone that's already starting to roll off production lines, chances are we might see it first at Mobile World Congress in late February. Naturally, we'll be there to bring you live coverage.

Corning introduces Gorilla Glass 3

Once, twice, three times a gorilla?
Corning's primate-themed glass is ready for a third go-round, and as you'd expect, it's even tougher than the first two iterations.

Gorilla Glass 3 has been improved at the molecular level, incorporating a proprietary feature called Native Damage Resistance (NDR). According to Corning, NDR reduces the propagation of flaws, the appearance of scratches and does a better job of maintaining the overall retained strength of the glass. As a result, GG3 claims a three-fold improvement in scratch resistance, 40 percent reduction in the number of visible scratches and 50 percent boost in retained strength after the glass becomes flawed.

None of this actually means your phone or tablet will survive a five-foot drop onto concrete, granted, but you'll at least feel more comfortable keeping your keys somewhere close by.

Samsung confirms Tizen-based handsets for 2013

Samsung will, in fact, launch some Tizen-based smartphones this year, the company has confirmed.

In a statement to CNET, a Samsung spokesperson said that the company plans "to unveil a competitive Tizen devices within this year." The person didn't say how many devices would be offered, and failed to provide details on what sort of features those handsets might deliver. Those details will be announced at a later time.

The Samsung spokesperson said that the company will launch more Tizen-based devices "based on market situations." Reports have been swirling for days that Samsung would be launching Tizen-based devices. Samsung did not, however, confirm its decision to launch Tizen handsets this year until today.

Tizen is a Linux-based operating system that came out of the death of Nokia's MeeGo platform. Intel and Samsung have taken over the development of Tizen, and the Linux Foundation is overseeing the project. The companies hope to make Tizen a stronger competitor to Android, which has been viewed by open-source advocates as too closed off for their liking.

Although Samsung is believed to have designs on making Tizen a leading mobile operating system, Android and Windows Phone are expected to be continue to be a key part of its mobile product mix for the foreseeable future. With Android-based handsets, especially, Samsung has watched its market share soar, but Tizen could be a way for the company to hedge its bets against a too-dominant Android.

2013 - Year of the Snake

Influences in the Year of the Water Snake

Water Snakes bring increased focus on intellectual pursuits. Depending on your natural inclinations, you may feel like learning something new or taking up an old, neglected study. You may want to take a few courses at a university where you can meet people of similar interests and expand your knowledge this year. Because of the Snake's changeable nature, you may even find yourself considering moving or changing jobs. However, beware of impulsive decisions, which is also a Snake tendency.

Attention to detail is a key element of Snake influence. You may find yourself noticing things you would normally overlook in your environment or in the people around you. This may be very helpful to you in terms of insight and self-understanding. If you are in therapy or counseling, you may make great progress at this time.

Snakes are generally associated with the fire element, so the water element this year can create balance. Water is the element of gentle persuasion, in which feelings and emotions are as important as knowledge. This may be why Water Snakes are better than other Snakes at getting along with people. Snakes dislike too much noise or excitement. It's important to have a quiet place to withdraw to. Think about fixing up a special room for study and relaxation.

In terms of relationships, the Snake brings sexual and sensual desire, but is also picky about a potential mate. Watch out for jealousy and possessiveness this year.

Children born this year can be expected to be intelligent and curious. However, their disposition may mean that they won't do well in a traditional school environment. If so, you may wish to educate them at home or in a specialized school. Snakes feel deeply, but do not express their feelings easily. The Water Snake child may appear shy or inattentive, but do not be fooled; he's actually paying close attention to your words and body language. Give him plenty of space and solitude to discover himself, but let him know you're there.

In Conclusion

Snakes are associated with long life, protection and good fortune. They are supposed to be related to dragons, the luckiest and most magical of creatures. Because they shed their skins, Snakes are also symbols of rebirth and renewal. They are a part of the natural world, to be respected but not feared.

Although 2013 may be very changeable and unpredictable, do not let fears of the unknown stop you from reaching your full potential. This year will most likely be very challenging, but it is up to you to rise to the occasion. Much like the old cliché, what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger; the Year of the Snake if the perfect time to channel your inner-strength.
